Story of Zadar

Zadar is an ancient city of dynamic and tumultuous history, often looted and devastated because of its great riches, but each time emerging stronger, prouder and even more beautiful! It is also the political, economic and tourist centre of Northern Dalmatia and the oldest continuously inhabited Croatian city!

The city with such illustrious cultural heritage and so many magnificent landmarks deserves to be praised and admired without reservations. Gaining its urban structure and importance already in Roman times during the periods of Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus, Zadar was only additionally strengthened and fortified with the construction of the impressive City Walls, as a part of the Venetian Works of Defence built between 16th and 17th centuries to prevent the Ottoman invasion. Zadar is also a UNESCO location with splendid churches and lively squares, a coastal resort of wonderful beaches, serene parks and enchanting promenades, a modern city of ingenious artistic installations, as well as a surreal setting of arguably the most beautiful sunset in the world!

THE CHURCH OF ST DONATUS

History & Culture

This amazing church from the 9th century is one of the symbols of Zadar and the largest Pre-Romanesque structure in Croatia!

The Church of St Donatus is 27 m high and 22 m wide, it has specific cylindrical shape and twofold interior and it stands out with its originality.

The whole structure is an architectural example of the Carolingian period and it is considered the most significant of its kind in Europe, particularly because of its unique rotund shape. Most of its ornaments, as well as its monolithic pillars, largely originate from the ruins of the nearby Roman Forum. Revered as the grandest edifice of Early Medieval Croatia and built with the interior that provides outstanding acoustic features, today it mostly serves as a remarkable venue for medieval renaissance music.

THE SEA ORGAN

City Break

This sound art object and experimental musical instrument creates lovely chimed tunes purely by the rolling power of sea waves!

In 2006 the Sea Organ won the European Urban Public Space Award in Barcelona among 207 competing projects and it is regularly included in the top ten Croatian landmarks on Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice.

The installation looks like a series of broad steps leading down into the sea, but there is a very clever engineering beneath their surface. Renowned architect Nikola Bašić has devised an ingenious system of resonant chambers that produces syncopated ever-changing tunes, which both soothe and excite the minds of countless amazed visitors, keeping them chilling and lingering on the Riva for hours just to hear that one more dreamlike sound before they leave!

THE CITY WALLS AND GATES

History & Culture

Zadar was once the largest city-fortress in the Republic of Venice and its City Walls were an important part of an elaborate defence system!

The City Walls of Zadar, together with the other five components of the Venetian Works of Defence of the 16th and 17th centuries, located in today’s Croatia, Italy and Montenegro, joined UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2017 as an outstanding monument of the alla moderna maritime fortification scheme.

The most impressive part of the Walls is the Land Gate, the main historic entrance to the city built in 1543 by famous Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli. As an integral part of the Walls, it is considered one of the finest Renaissance monuments in whole Dalmatia, boasting its triumphal arch, central passage and two smaller side arches for pedestrians.
